Groundwater Information Via The Kentucky Groundwater Data Repository
The Kentucky Geological Survey maintains databases of research data that are searchable on the Web. Below are links to
services that can be used to find various types of groundwater data, and to other sites with information about water research in Kentucky:
- Search for Water Well and Spring Records
Search for water well and spring data by county, quadrangle, AKGWA number, or radius around a point of interest. Returned data includes information about location, useage, construction, and when available, the lithology and casing data for a well. You can also download the well and spring locations and the lithology and casing data. Map links are also given for plotting on the groundwater map service.
- Download All Water Well Records
Download the latest version (version history in download ReadMe) of all water wells stored in the KY Groundwater Repository. Download is a Zip file (about 25 MB) containing both an MS Excel (xslx) and ESRI Shapefile of the data. Version is dated in the download (data is updated from the KY Division of Water on a quarterly basis).
- Download All Spring Records
Download the latest version (version history in download ReadMe) of all springs stored in the KY Groundwater Repository. Download is a Zip file (about 1 MB) containing both an MS Excel (xslx) and ESRI Shapefile of the data. Version is dated in the download (data is updated from the KY Division of Water on a quarterly basis).
- Water Well and Spring Map
This is a focused water well and spring map for Kentucky which displays wells and springs data for the zoomed-in area. Click on a well or spring to view information and a link to the detailed report. The page also displays all the wells and springs in the viewed map area. The map also has a tool to zoom to a coordinate location and display a circle with a input radius, where the wells and springs table displays the wells and springs in that circle area.- Water Well and Spring Map Layout (Geologic Map Service)
This links to the Water Wells and Springs map layout on the KGS Geologic Map Information service. It shows the location of water wells and springs on a topographic basemap from the KGS database. Click a well or spring to get information about that feature. Many other KGS layers are available (geologic map, sinkholes, etc) to be turned on/off through this service.- Search for Water Well and Spring Groundwater-Quality Data
Search for water well and spring groundwater-quality data by county, quadrangle, AKGWA number, or radius around a point of interest. You can view and download data from individual wells and springs for 545 different analytes from 15 analyte groups: bulk water properties, caffeine & derivatives, herbicides, inorganics, metals, microbes, nutrients, PCB's, pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons, radionuclides, residues, SVOC's, VOC's, and other analytes. Data can be downloaded and a link to the groundwater quality map is provided for each location.
- Graphical Groundwater-Quality Comparison
Plot groundwater-quality data by Physiographic Province or HUC 6 Watershed basin for 38 possible analytes. You can choose to display the data in a cumulative, analytical value vs. well depth, or box-and-whisker plot. - Groundwater-Quality Data Map Service
Use this map service to create a thematic map with the same water quality data (545 different analytes from 15 analyte groups) that is found in the groundwater-quality data search above. Select one analyte from a category and view the analysis results as symbols across the state or an area of interest. Analysis data for each site can also be viewed, and a link back to the data search is provided for data download capability.
- USGS Hydrologic Atlases
Scanned-in images (PDF format) of the USGS Hydrologic Atlases. These are hosted by the Kentucky Geological Survey and are available for free download or available from KGS for the prices listed. - County Groundwater Resource Reports
Groundwater resource reports for each county in Kentucky. Each report is a compilation of information on hydrology, geology, topography, water supply, and water quality taken from maps, reports, and data collected from 1940 to 2000. - Static Groundwater Quality Maps
Static maps available for download (PDF format) displaying a range-of-value data for over 50 parameters of groundwater quality from samples taken across Kentucky.
- Water Publications
Search for KGS water-related publications on the KGS Publications and Map Search on KYGeode. On the Advanced Search, select "Water" in the limit by subject box (and search by title, keyword, or author). - Major Kentucky River Basins
These are KGS published maps available for download (PDF format) for each of the 7 major river basins in Kentucky. Each map has information describing the hydrogeology, land-use, and water-based recreation within a basin. - Kentucky Division of Water Maps
A wide variety of water-specific web maps, applications, and services are showcased from this Portal. DOW has compiled these maps as a service to their customers using information from various sources. DOW cannot ensure that the information is accurate, current or complete. Neither the information presented nor the maps themselves are official documents. - Kentucky Watershed Watch
A volunteer water quality monitoring program that provides Kentucky citizens with the opportunity to learn about and protect their local water resources. Data collected by volunteers is used to help identify water quality issues and to inform management decisions.
