Name: LiDAR Sinkholes
Display Field: County
Type: Feature Layer
Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon
Description: Note: The LiDAR sinkhole maps included here are provisional and updates will be provided if needed. Each sinkhole is presented as a polygon feature and the attribute table contains the following fields: SinkholeID: an 8-digit numerical code, in which the left three digits represent FIPS county code and the remaining five digits are sequential. Latitude: latitude of the centroid of the sinkholeLongitude: longitude of the centroid of the sinkhole Area_sqft: the approximate surficial area of the sinkhole in square footCounty: county location of the sinkholeMethod: the method used for identifying the sinkhole Field Verified: Show if the sinkhole is checked and verified in the field. 2015 (Initital release):The initial relase includes sinkholes in Bullitt, Jefferson, and Oldham Counties. The sinkhole maps are derived from LiDAR data using ArcGIS versions 10.1 and higher. LiDAR data were used to create digital elevation models (DEMs). Surface depressions were then extracted from the DEMs and visually inspected for sinkholes. Field verification suggests that the accuracy of the identified sinkholes to be real sinkholes is over 85%. LiDAR data were provided by the Louisville/Jefferson County Information Consortium (LOJIC) through Kentucky Division of Geographic Information. The LiDAR was flown in August, 2009 and the average LiDAR point spacing is 1.0 meter. DEMs were created using LAS Class 2 surface with 5 feet resolution. Updates:2017:LiDAR Sinkhole maps for Fayette, Woodford, Boyle, and Jessamine Counties are added. Sinkholes mapped in 2017 used LiDAR-derived 5-ft DEMs. These DEMs are obtained from Kentucky's Elevation Data & Aerial Photography Program (https://kyfromabove.ky.gov/).2019:LiDAR sinkhole maps for Anderson, Bourbon, Franklin, Madison, Mercer, Shelby, and Scott counties are added. Sinkholes mapped in 2019 used LiDAR-derived 5-ft DEMs. These DEMs are obtained from Kentucky's Elevation Data & Aerial Photography Program (https://kyfromabove.ky.gov/).2022:LiDAR sinkhole maps for Clark, Garrard, Harrison, Montgomery, and Owen counties are added. Sinkholes mapped in 2022 used LiDAR-derived 5-ft DEMs. These DEMs are obtained from Kentucky's Elevation Data & Aerial Photography Program (https://kyfromabove.ky.gov/). The mapping work in 2022 is supported by the Paul Edwin Potter Internship Program.2024:This update adds sinkholes mapped for two groups of counties with different funding supports. One group consists of Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, and Washington counties, which were mapped in 2022 with support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant project number PDMC-PL-04-KY-2018-012 The other group consists of Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, Henry, Spencer counties, which were mapped in 2023 with support from the Paul Edwin Potter Internship ProgramAdded sinkholes were mapped from LiDAR-derived 5-ft DEMs. These DEMs were obtained from Kentucky's Elevation Data & Aerial Photography Program (https://kyfromabove.ky.gov/)2026:This update adds sinkholes mapped for Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson, and Warren Counties with funding support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant project number HMGP DR-4630-0017-P Added sinkholes were mapped from LiDAR-derived 5-ft DEMs. These DEMs were obtained from Kentucky's Elevation Data & Aerial Photography Program (https://kyfromabove.ky.gov/)
