Water Well and Spring Record Searches
Online water well and spring record searches are available free
of charge on the KGS Web site. Instructions on how to run the online search are provided below.
The results of each search can be downloaded to a delimited text file with user-defined geographic
coordinates in a desired datum and projection, which can then be inserted into spreadsheets or GIS systems.
Search results can also be viewed on an interactive topographic map or aerial photograph by zooming in to the
specified area.
HOW TO FIND THE ONLINE WATER WELL AND SPRING RECORDS SEARCH
- Navigate to the KGS Web site (www.uky.edu/kgs),
then click on the "Search Databases and Publications" link under the
"Data and Services" heading.
- Click on "Search for Groundwater Information" in the right-hand box.
- Seven (7) options are available here, including the water well and spring record search, the water well and spring location map service, the groundwater-quality data search,
the graphical groundwater-quality comparison service, the groundwater-quality data map service, the karst potential index map service, and the KGS water research home page.
To search for water-well or spring data, click on "Search for Water Well & Spring Records".
A tutorial (this page) is also available on this menu box. To view many additional resources on general water information in Kentucky,
click on "KGS Water Research Home Page".
HOW TO USE THE ONLINE WATER WELL AND SPRING RECORDS SEARCH
- Limit the geographic area for the search (required step).
The default search is set to search for well or spring records by county.
To select a different search method, such as by quadrangle or user-defined radius-search, choose the type of search desired in the Select a Search Method box.
From this point, follow the instructions to find the water wells or springs in the specified area.
If you are interested in water-quality data, note that you can select only wells or springs that have
water-quality analyses by clicking the check box provided.
- View the results. After selecting the area in which you want to search,
there are three options regarding initiating a data search (four options if you are using a radius search).
Click the "Water Wells" or "Springs" buttons to view data. To reset the search, click "Reset".
After the data are displayed in tabular format, click on page numbers at top or bottom of
results table to view more records. Results can be sorted in several ways by using the
"Sort Results By..." drop-down menu and hitting "Resubmit". If you selected a radius-search,
you also have the option to see search results on a topographic map, with the specified radius
outlined in red, by clicking "Wells & Springs Map". Zooming in on the map will change the
topographic map to an aerial photo.
- More detailed information on each well or spring, including casing or lithology data (where available),
can be obtained by clicking on the "Well (Spring) Report" link in the results table.
To view the resulting wells or springs on an interactive map, click the "Map View" button
for any selected well in the results table. The map will be centered on the selected well.
- To download delimited data into a text file that can be input into spreadsheets or GIS systems,
click on the "Download Header Report" (general well information) or "Download Water Quality Analyses"
buttons at the top of the search results page.
