About Infrasound Monitoring

Infrasound refers to sound waves with frequencies below the threshold of human hearing — generally below 20 Hz. While inaudible, these low-frequency pressure waves can travel thousands of miles and are generated by a wide range of natural and human-caused events.

The Kentucky Geological Survey operates a network of infrasound pressure sensors co-located with seismic stations across Kentucky.

Infrasound data complement seismic recordings — together they help distinguish between natural seismic events and surface explosions, and aid in rapid event characterization. Each station records infrasound data on the EDF channel (pressure sensor, infrasound component).
