Data fields description
coreIDUnique id number for the data row (useful for GIS - use 'call_number' for KGS identification of the core record).
call_numberUnique serial identifier for each core in the KGS database.
core_purposeIdentifies the original purpose of the core.
general_locationIdentifies the part of the state from where the core is derived.
operatorWell operator of record when the well for the core was originally drilled.
hole_numberCore hole number assigned by the original operator. This number matches the drilling records on file at the Kentucky Geological Survey.
farm_nameOriginal farm or lease name (usually mineral owner in the case of severed minerals) under which the well was drilled.
core_elevationRecorded ground-level elevation of the well in feet above sea-level.
interval_topThe recorded depth in feet of the top of the core.
interval_bottomThe recorded depth in feet of the bottom of the core.
number_of_boxesThe number of core boxes for the core.
date_receivedThe date the core was received at the EARL.
date_processedThe date the core was processed at the EARL
commentsRelevant comments recorded by EARL staff.
coal_uniqueidIf the core is derived from a coal borehole, this is the KGS identifier that can be used to identify the original coal borehole.
record_numberIf the core is derived from an oil and gas well, this is the KGS identifier that can be used to identify the original oil and gas well.
shelf_numberThe shelf number at the EARL where the core is stored.
core_descriptionIndicates if a core has a description (-1 for yes).
core_analysisIndicates if a core has an analysis (-1 for yes).
azimuthThe recorded azimuth of the core.
inclinationThe recorded inclination of the core.
skipsIndicates if the core has skips (-1 for yes).
IGSNThe International Geo Sample Number assigned to this core. This allows this core to be discoverable in the System for Earth Sample Registration.
ns_feetFeet from north or south bounding 1-minute Carter coordinate line.
ew_feetFeet from east or west bounding 1-minute Carter coordinate line.
n_or_sDesignation of north (N) or south (S) bounding 1-minute carter section line.
e_or_wDesignation of east (E) or west (W) bounding 1-minute carter section line.
carter_section1-minute Carter section number.
carter_letter5-minute Carter section letter.
carter_number5-minute Carter section number.
quadrangle_nameName of the USGS 7.5-minute, 1:24,000-scale quadrangle on which the core is located.
county_nameCounty in which the core is located.
stateState in which the core is located.
surface_elevationGround-level elevation of the core (well) in feet above sea level.
cored_intervalThe recorded depth in feet for the top to the bottom of the core.
core_photosIndicates if a core has photos taken of the core boxes (-1 for yes).
diameterThe diameter of the core in inches.
akgwaIf the core is derived from a water well, this is the KGS identifier that can be used to identify the original water well.
CoreReport_urlThis is the URL for the detailed core report for this core. This will also display the core photos for boxes if they are available.
carter_coordinatesFull carter coordinate for the record_number. The format is (e.g. 24-S-83 150S, 1800W):
[1-minute Carter section number]-
[5-minute Carter section letter]-
[5-minute Carter section number]
[Feet from north or south bounding 1-minute Carter coordinate line][Designation of north (N) or south (S) bounding 1-minute carter section line],
[Feet from east or west bounding 1-minute Carter coordinate line][Designation of east (E) or west (W) bounding 1-minute carter section line].

Note that some core records may not contain the footage data or 1-minute Carter section number. More information about Carter Coordinates.
coordinate_system_nameName of the selected coordinate system for the x_coordinate and y_coordinate.
coordinate_EPSGThe European Petroleum Survey Group (EPSG) Spatial Reference System Identifier (SRID) for the selected coordinate system. This is a standard code describing the selected coordinate system and is useful for GIS and web mapping.
x_coordinateThe x coordinate (latitude or easting) in the selected coordinate system for the call_number, if available.
y_coordinateThe y coordinate (longitude or northing) in the selected coordinate system for the call_number, if available.
