Coal Data
The Kentucky Geological Survey maintains databases of research data that are searchable on the Web.
Below are links to to services that can be use to find various types of coal data in both the eastern and
western Kentucky coalfields.
- Search for Borehole Data
Search for coal borehole header data (which are downloadable with coordinate information) by county, quadrangle, or coordinates, plus stratigraphic parameters. Links are provided to view and download the lithologic and seam reports for boreholes, documents related to boreholes, and images of the borehole strip logs.- more info
- Search for Coal Thickness Data (KCRIS)
Search for coal thickness data (the Kentucky Coal Resources Information System (KCRIS) database) by county, quadrangle, or coordinates, plus stratigraphic parameters. These data are generally surface observations at outcrops, high walls, and road cuts, but may include some data from drillholes and underground mines.- more info
- Search for Coal Production Data
Find coal production data for Kentucky since 1790, which can be searched for by year and/or region or county. Data can also be viewed in a graph format or downloaded.- more info
- Search for Coal Quality Data
Search the coal analyses database for coal quality data by county, quadrangle, or coordinates, plus stratigraphic parameters. Five types of analyses are available for download from this service: ultimate, proximate, physical properties, whole coal elements, and ash elements.- more info
- Coal Information Map Service
This links to the Coal Information map layout on the KGS Geologic Map Information service. It shows the extent of coal beds, the locations of coal boreholes and coal thickness measurements, and faults from the KGS database.
- Core Description Manual
This is an online version of a field guide for logging core in the eastern Kentucky.
- Minemap Information
View extents of Kentucky coal mines online, and download mine map shapefiles and scanned mine maps.
